Alappuzha is also famous for its Snake boat races, houseboat cruise and coir industry. It is spread on the banks of canals, lakes and lagoons.Toddy-tapping, coir-making, prawn-farming these are main income of rural areas. The coir industry here also produces coir of a very high quality. The Dutch and the Portuguese were the initial rulers of the place. Later, Maharaja Marthandavarma came to power and tremendously developed the infrastructure of the place. This also resulted in the establishment of a number of coir factories. Additionally, you can also view the noted Nehru Cup Snake Boat Race which is specially held in the December month.

Climate & Best time to Visit
Owing to its proximity to the sea, the climate of Alleppey is humid with not much difference in temperature during the summer (22 to 35 degrees) and winter (18 to 32 degrees) seasons. Although the place remains fairly cool and pleasant during the winters, it can be visited anytime between August and March.

Backwaters of Alleppey & Houseboat (Kettuvaloms) stays
The houseboats of Kerala have become one of the most exciting tourism products in India. Today there are A/c and Non A/c house boats with Deluxe and Luxury facilities. The houseboat holidays of Kerala are increasingly becoming popular with domestic as well as international tourists.

Snake Boat Race
Boat race crews begin to practice for the race months before the great day. They live together, eat together, toil together to work themselves into a smooth, co-ordinate team.

Ambalapuzha Temple
Ambalapuzha, situated 12 km south of Alleppey is known for it’s religious shrines including the famous temple dedicated to Lord Krishna which is known for the milk porridge 'prasadam' served here. An ancient image of Lord Buddha is situated near by, from the times when Buddhism was at its peak in the region.

St. Mary's Church
One of the oldest churches in India, the St. Mary's Church is believed to have been set up by St. Thomas. Situated in Champakulam, the church is known for its annual fest which falls on the 3rd Sunday of October every year.

Krishnapuram Palace
The 18th century palace of the Travancore kings is situated 47 km from Alleppey. Chinese Fishing Nets/Vasco da Gama Square

These huge cantilevered fishing nets are the legacy of one of the first visitors to the Malabar Coast. Erected here between 1350 and 1450 AD by traders from the court of Kublai Khan, these nets are set up on teak wood and bamboo poles. The best place to watch the nets being lowered into the sea and catch being brought in is the Vasco da Gama Square, a narrow promenade that runs along the beach. The Square is an ideal place to idle, with stalls serving fresh delicious seafood, tender coconut etc.

Vasco House
Believed to have been the residence of Vasco da Gama, this is one of the oldest Portuguese residences in Fort Kochi. Built in the early sixteenth century, Vasco House sports the typical European glass paned windows and balcony cum verandahs characteristic of the times.

The Cochin Club
The club, with its impressive library and collection of sporting trophies, is housed in a beautifully landscaped park. In the early 1900s, when the club had just become operational, admission was restricted to the British and to men only.
